The last few months have made me a changed human being…

“A compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it’ll point you True North from where you’re standing, but it’s got no advice about the swamps and dessert and chasm that you’ll encounter along the way.”

                                                                  -Abraham Lincoln (movie)

On 10th march 2020, I woke up early and got ready for my school. I was excited as I was to attend my first class in 10th standard. The classes for the new session started quite early as this was the board year. I reached the school, met my friends, studied a bit and came back home. I thought that now this would be the daily routine for me but who would have thought that God had willed otherwise. I have not attended the school since then. Actually, the Uttarakhand government decided to close all the schools of the state due to rise in covid-19 cases. After some days, a nationwide lockdown was announced by the Central government. As I am writing this piece, four months have passed and the schools are still not open. Well, the truth is I am not hoping for the schools to open in the near future as well. I was a bit concerned about my studies at first but fortunately our school responded very well to the unprecedented situation and started online classes. But it is difficult for a mobile human to remain at a single place for long. So reading and running, the two Rs became the formula for my life. Waking up early and running in the terrace gave me a fresh start and helped to stay fit while reading about some great personalities like Sourav Ganguly and Mahatma Gandhi taught me many things.

As the lockdown extended for the first time, I became a bit restless but then, I started to watch Mr. Prem Rawat, who is a Peace Ambassador. His messages are so enlightening and rationale that I was attracted towards it. His words “What you are looking for is inside you” left a great impact on me. His words guided me in these difficult times.

During this time, I also took a great interest on national issues and then came the news of migrant labourers. This was I think the saddest part of this period. Everyday some or the other heart wrenching visuals would come on news. But, this gave an opportunity for the humanity to rise above everything. Many people came forward to help as much as they can. From Sonu Sood’s efforts to send the migrants home to the Bengaluru women who donated Rs. 500 from the 600 she used to get as salary. All these instances were worth appreciating. My heart was filled with gratitude that my conditions are far better than those poor labourers. I then started acknowledging my life more.

My interest also bent towards economics some time back and I still like to read about it. I did a detailed study on issues like Petrol and Diesel price hike, FCI’s food stock, central government’s Covid-19 stimulus etc. thanks to some veteran economists like Swaminathan Aiyer, Vivek Kaul, Arun Kumar. Most of my studies were from a brilliant podcast by Amit Varma and Vivek Kaul where they introspected some topics with an economic lens. Also, I began to ponder about my future and the profession I would like to choose in my life, which I couldn’t have done considering the monotonous schedule I previously had.

All in all, this isolation gave me an exposure which I couldn’t have got otherwise. I got to learn values like sympathy, gratitude, kindness and humanity. And of course, time spent with my family during this period was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. We played cricket, ludo, badminton, cards and enjoyed a lot. I also realised the value of work our mothers do at home.At the end of the day I found myself a completely changed personality than I was months back which eventually made me conclude that every cloud has a silver lining on it.

Thoughts expressed with utmost precision and a lot of clarity …….your introspection makes me happy as in life it is important to pause a bit, take a deep breath and reflect…..those who have the ability to think & reflect, evaluate and keep themselves occupied go a long way!!

They say solitude is your best friend for if you can enjoy your own company when alone, there is no way you will ever be alone. You will always find yourself with sooo much to do
